Target Archery This is an Olympic sport in which the UK does quite well. In this arrows are shot at set distances in rounds at a target of coloured rings. A round consists of set numbers of arrows at a selection of different distances. These range from 20yds to 100yds and 4 dozen to 12 dozen arrows, there are Imperial rounds which have been shot for centuries and more recent metric rounds which are the International rounds set by FITA (Federation International de Tir a l'Arc) the International governing body. Field Archery This is something like golf. Archers walk round a course, often in woodland, shooting at different targets which may be pictures of animals, as in hunting.
Roving This is archery where the archers take a walk and targets are picked as they wander, they may be tufts of grass or similar that are picked by the best archer at the last target.
Clout Shooting the target is a stick in the ground and the arrows are shot up in the air to fall closest to the stick.
Popinjay Arrows are shot at 'birds' on a pole from underneath.
Flight Shooting is where maximum distance is aimed for. This is very rarely shot in the UK as it requires a very long distance, the current record is over a mile and specialist bows are used.
